Stepping Stones, Mortar Joints, and Gutter Repair

An easy way for the homeowner to install a picturesque stepping-stone walk around the outside of his home is to cast individual concrete stones in place right in the soil. This avoids the necessity for lugging heavy stones and permits making each one any size or shape desired. Excavate the soil for each stone to a depth of about three inches, and make the sides and bottom of the excavation smooth and even. Then mix small individual batches of concrete for each form. Use the ready-mixed kind which is sold in bags in dry form so that only water need be added. Level off the top of each concrete stone by dragging a length of 2 x 4 edgewise across the surface. Allow to stiffen slightly, and then rub smooth with a wooden float or trowel.
