  • Why Every Contractor Needs A Laser Level

The principles of measurement in the construction industry have remained unchanged for hundreds - if not thousands - of years; but materials, assembly procedures, the interaction between various trades - not to mention time and cost pressures, have changed. The precise reason why every contractor should be using laser measuring instruments now, more than ever. Don't jump the gun and purchase the wrong technology... Rather, before buying, determine what functions you need, how you will use it, and budget accordingly. Learn more about laser levels on the Nail Gun Network.
    Stabila Laser Level 07380
Let's start with some basics - which type of laser measuring device do you need? Self-leveling lasers vary in price, depending on what features the user needs. Look to spend anywhere from $200 to $500 for a decent laser level. Keep in mind, paying a little extra upfront for quality will hopefully prevent an untimely demise. Many of Stabila's products, for example, come out of the box with varying degrees of dust and waterproofing protection - with certain models such as the "OFF ROAD" system designed specifically for dust, water and drop protection.
    Stabila 05600TR Laser Kit
Some laser levels are designed for specific applications, such as concrete construction, interior construction and general contracting. Make sure to research the different features available - and compare available models for their features. Depending on the model, features can include the ability to rotate, project grid lines, target specific points and more. Construction contractors might find they need more than a basic laser level - which is why Stabila offers several models as full kits too. Depending on the kit, this could include a mounting device or tripod, long distance receiver, laser measuring tool and more.
Stabila Laser Level Tile Install App
For engineers and project managers, who might not need a laser level during prefabrication planning, Stabila offers an assortment of laser distance measuring devices too. The top-of-the-line LD420 model can convert measurements, estimate labor and material costs, and store data - among other features.
    Stabila Laser Distance Measure
No matter the project, there's a laser level or measuring tool to bring balance to your work.

  • What Type Of Air Hose Do I Need For My Compressor?

Imagine this scenario. You've purchased a new pneumatic tool, go to hook the tool up to your air compressor, only to find out you don't have the right air hose to connect your tool. You ask, what type of air hose do I need for my compressor? The question is simple - the answer, a bit more complex. Let's explore what type of air hose will suit your application best, when you enter the Nail Gun Network.
Before getting into the different types of air hoses for an air compressor, you'll need to determine which size fitting your compressor requires. Most hoses for air compressors range in size from 1/4" to 1" in diameter. You should be able to find which hose diameter is suitable by looking at your air compressor. Some air compressors will allow you to use several different sized hoses, simply by switching out the hose fitting (where the hose and air compressor connect). Another point to think about, larger tools will require more air to power them, which means you'll need a compressor with more power.
    Coilhose Air Hose Fitting
Next, you'll want to think about hose length. For a workshop, where the compressor and air tool(s) are kept close together and do not require extra reach, consider a 25' or 50' air hose. If you're a contractor on the construction site, 50' to 100' hoses typically work out better. Keep in mind, you'll still need the correct fittings to connect your air hose to the tool and compressor.
The last thing to consider - also the area that offers the most "flexibility" in choosing an air hose - the material it's made from. Most air hoses on Nail Gun Depot are made from either polyurethane or rubber. For applications working with pneumatic tools, we generally recommend either of these materials. PVC and nylon air hoses are also available, but are generally less durable and are not intended for high-pressure usage. Rubber compressor hoses are fairly common, generally for home workshop use. Rubber material handles temperature change well, making it a suitable choice for powering an air tool. For more intense use, contractors generally prefer polyurethane air hoses, which also do well in extreme temperatures (warm and cold), but offer added flexibility with less risk of damage. Polyurethane has been found to stand up better to cuts, kinks and more, as a long-term investment.
    Coilhose Polyurethane Air Hose
Interested in upgrading? Choose from a selection of air hoses, fittings and other pneumatic accessories from premium manufacturers such as Coilhose, Senco, RolAir and others. Our bet, you won't regret it.

  • New To Nail Gun Depot: Stabila Levels & Lasers

New on Nail Gun Depot, have you seen our selection of Stabila construction levels and laser levels? Don't trust your next project to a good guess, get the accuracy only a level can provide. Choose from a wide variety of levels and lasers, including a full selection of spirit levels, mason levels, magnetic levels, plate levels, pocket levels, torpedo levels, exact length levels, electronic levels and more. Tripods, repair kits and other accessory items are also now available.
    Stabila Spirit Levels
Let's take a quick look at what each type of level does:
    Stabila Logo
Spirit Level: Spirit levels fill the broadest range of what can be defined as a construction level or measuring level. Speaking in the most general terms, a spirit level is a measuring device that can determine an exact measurement of levelness based on the placement of an air pocket within a horizontal (level) and/or a vertical (plumb) vial. Most levels are technically spirit levels. You'll generally see levels categorized on Nail Gun Depot as spirit levels if they don't fill another niche application.
    Stabila R-Beam Spirit Level
Fun Fact: Spirit levels were created by a French inventor and have been around since the Mid-1600's.
Plate Level: Plate levels are also spirit levels, but they are designed specifically to measure the degree of levelness at wall plates. This type of construction level is intended for those that do wall framing or work with structural framing. The Stabila plate level(s) we offer feature extendable bodies that can nearly double in length. A reinforced frame allows these plate levels to easily measure plate to plate wall height for either commercial or residential applications.
    Stabila Plate Level
Torpedo Level: On the other end of the spectrum, torpedo levels are much more compact, designed for applications in carpentry or anywhere else a compact spirit level is required. Stabila also offers magnetic torpedo levels, providing a superior grip on pipes, conduit, posts or any other metal surface that is magnetic. Torpedo levels are an excellent option for anyone who wants a compact spirit level to use around the house or shop.
    Stabila Torpedo Level
Pocket Level: Similar to torpedo levels, pocket levels are designed to be small enough that you can simply stuff them into your pocket. While a pocket level isn't nearly as rugged or durable as some of the other level types listed in this article, contractors are attracted to the simplicity and portability of these nifty little gadgets. Pocket levels are more of an accessory item for a general contractor or carpenter; something they can keep in their pocket and easily transport from job to job.
    Stabila Pocket Level
Mason Level: Mason levels are designed for bricklaying or similar applications. With a reinforced frame, strike zones designed specifically for being hit with a trowel, an easy to clean body (for removing mortar), and much more, Stabila mason levels are extra rugged, yet equally as versatile.
    Stabila Mason Level
Magnetic Level: We've briefly touched on the capabilities of a magnetic level already, but just to reiterate, these levels are mostly designed for applications where you need to measure the degree of levelness for a surface that is made of magnetic metal. This applies to steel framing - among other uses. Stabila magnetic levels are capable of adhering to a magnetic surface upside down, designed for hands-free capability.
    Stabila Magnetic Levels
Exact Length Level: Exact length levels are similar to plate levels, and are part of the spirit level family, but are designed specifically for door and window installation. Stabila XtL exact length levels cover more than 80% of all door and window installations. Stabila XtL expands and locks to the exact size needed for any project. Two Stabila XtL levels cover the same range as the 5-6 level sets normally carried by door and window installers. Consider exact length models a big level in a small package.
    Stabila XtL Level
Electronic Level: Electronic levels are designed for tech savvy contractors. Featuring electronic measuring technology, two digital displays, an audible inclination guide, and a dust/waterproof body, Stabila electronic levels are the way of the future. Between fast, accurate readings - and the ability to instantly convert measurements - who wouldn't want an electronic level? Just keep in mind, these are not the least expensive option available - but they do offer unique benefits that can't be found on any other type of construction level.
    Stabila Electronic Level
Laser Level: Laser measuring instruments, also known as laser levels, are the answer to an ever changing construction industry, where materials, assembly systems, the interaction of the various trades, time and cost pressures are constantly on the move. Laser levels do the same job as their spirit level counterpart, the fundamental difference being, laser levels project a non-permanent laser beam of light onto a surface in a perfectly level formation. Depending on the intensity of the laser beam, the direction(s) it is required to display, and other unique characteristics, prices on these nifty devices can range from a couple hundred dollars, all the way into the thousands.

  • What Does A Nail Gun Warranty Cover?

Picture this, the nailer you bought six months ago suddenly stops running. The power supply is fine, but the tool's dead. Time to visit an authorized repair center - but who's on the hook for the repair bill? You might be surprised at the answer. Learn more about your nailer's warranty, what constitutes a wearable part, and everything else you need to know before picking up the tab for your tool's repair bill - here on the Nail Gun Network.
The best advice we can give you regarding warranty coverage for your tool - or any item for that matter - read the fine print carefully. Every manufacturer has their own legal staff that writes and reviews what is covered in a product warranty, down to the smallest screw. With that said, use the following as a general overview of what would typically be included within the warranty coverage for a brand-new nail gun. Always consult the manufacturer's warranty policy before filing your claim.
    Freeman Tools Warranty
Believe it or not, the clause that trips up our customers most frequently - when they find out their warranty does not include wearable parts. This leads to the next question, what's considered a wearable part? There's a general consensus among manufacturers that wearable parts include the following components: o-rings, bumpers and driver blades. Some manufacturers might categorize additional components as wearable, but you can almost always guarantee the three parts above WILL NOT be included in your warranty coverage.
NOTE: Some warranties only cover parts, excluding labor expense. This is particularly true in warranties that extend beyond the standard one-year guarantee. Generally, each manufacturer will specify if this is the case.
    Bostitch Warranty
Don't kick the dirt just yet! All three of the components mentioned earlier are relatively inexpensive to repair, and are considered regular maintenance items on your nailer. Just like you would change the oil filter in your car or replace the brakes, these items require periodic attention to keep your nail gun performing at its best.
Furthermore, what about the components that ARE covered by the warranty? Most brands of nail gun, staple gun or screw gun offer a standard one-year manufacturer's warranty. Some brands go above and beyond, offering additional protection for their product owners. If you are looking for a lifetime guarantee, Quik Drive stands behind their screw gun attachments with their limited-lifetime warranty. While it only covers the attachment (motors generally come with one year of coverage), it demonstrates the quality and durability representative of these products. Bostitch and Freeman Tools offer seven-year warranties on many of their nailers and staplers, and Senco offers a five-year warranty on its XP line of pneumatic tools.
    Senco Tools
One final point to remember, a warranty's coverage only protects against normal use. It's ultimately up to the manufacturer to determine whether or not the owner has taken the necessary measures to ensure their tool was properly cared for prior to failure. In almost all instances, this rules out accidental damage or undue abuse. For example, if the nailer was left outside permanently and exposed to harsh conditions as a result, it could void your warranty coverage. Likewise, if a roofing nailer is dropped from a two-story roof, coverage would most likely be voided as well. Making alterations to a tool is another way to void its warranty.
Here's our best advice. Maintain your tools per the manufacturer's specifications, see that they are not misused or abused, and have them serviced at the first sign of trouble. Some manufacturers offer the ability to register your tool online, which helps to confirm the range of time your warranty is valid. Save your sales receipts and keep your tool's service records on-hand if applicable. If you stick to these rules, your nailer, stapler or screw gun should provide many years of reliable service.

  • Maintaining Pneumatic Tools & Compressors For Cold Weather

If you live in a region susceptible to winter weather, as most North Americans do, it's crucial that your pneumatic tools and air compressors are properly maintained for the cold. If at all possible, it's best to avoid using pneumatic tools in temperatures below freezing - however, for contractors that depend on their tools for a living, there are measures that can be taken to help protect the integrity and performance of your tools or compressor from the freezing cold. Find out more - right here on the Nail Gun Network.

Cold Weather Tool & Compressor Maintenance
Let's start with cold weather maintenance tips for an air compressor. As an air compressor runs, moisture builds up in the tank from compression taking place. While it is good practice to make sure the tank is drained after every use (particularly in damp, humid climates), it is especially important in cold or freezing temperatures, as this water moisture can freeze and seize up the entire unit. To drain your compressor, simply release the drain valve, which is typically located on or near the bottom of the tank. Make sure you do this while the tank is under some pressure - then, take care to close the valve or valves until the air stops leaking. NOTE: never twist the valves with pliers.

Other cold weather tips for your compressor, consider using heat lamps to keep the compressor regulator from freezing. You can also put your compressor on a continuous run cycle, if available on the model you own. Need help picking out a compressor? You can visit Nail Gun's Introduction To Air Compressors.

Now that your compressor is running, let's take a look at cold weather maintenance for pneumatic tools. First and foremost, make sure you are lubricating your tool with cold weather tool oil, such as Senco's PC1295 Moisture Shield cold weather air tool oil. Using a cold weather lubricant such as this one, is great preventative maintenance that is easy and inexpensive. You can apply a manufacturer approved cold weather tool oil to the tool itself - and the air line.

Other cold weather tips for your pneumatic tool, when starting use in freezing temperatures, as the compressor builds up, WITHOUT fasteners in the tool, hook up your pneumatic nailer or stapler to the compressor and fire @ 40 PSI to help warm up the tool before use. NOTE: Make sure the tool has no fasteners in its magazine before/during firing to avoid damaging the tool or work surface and prevent injury.

You can also rotate pneumatic tools - while keeping the idle tools warm. Using pipe insulation that fits over a coupler is another method that helps create a barrier between the tool and cold air. Can't decide which pneumatic tool is right for your application, check out Nail Gun's Construction Tool Index.

We can't guarantee all of these tips will work for everyone, but if used appropriately, they might save you some major repair expense and downtime on the job. Tools and compressors that are not maintained or used as the manufacturer specifies are susceptible to damage and destruction - so save yourself time, money, and a major headache, and prepare your equipment for responsible use.
