  • Visiting The 2014 STAFDA Show

You were probably surprised to see there wasn't a new NGD blog post yesterday. Well, we're making up for it today, now that we're back from STAFDA.
    STAFDA 2014
To summarize the entire 2014 STAFDA show, we would have to write a book. With several hundred exhibitors - and many more attendees - STAFDA is a mecca for the tool and fastener industry. Every year, the Specialty Tools & Fasteners Distributors Association (STAFDA) puts on the event, hosting the convention in various cities across the U.S.
    STAFDA 2014
This year, STAFDA visited Charlotte, NC. Home to the NASCAR Hall of Fame and other attractions, here's a brief overview of NGD's trip to North Carolina.
    Charlotte, NC
As tool and fastener technology continues to grow, STAFDA is a great place to catch a glimpse of the latest and greatest within the industry. Among highlights of the show, we caught a close-up glance at the Bostitch Smart Point nailers - as well as their all-new cordless carton closing staplers. We also saw QuikDrive's new cordless motor (powered by Fein), capable for use with all QuikDrive attachments. Stinger featured all of their cap fastening tools - and we saw an up close demonstration of the stand-up CAMO hidden-deck fastening tool.
    CAMO EdgePro
From Senco, STAFDA served as the launching point for two new tools, the RoofPro 445XP and the SCN63LDXP structural foam insulation nailer. MAX displayed their completely refreshed CN565S2 coil siding nailer - and Jaaco featured their ballistic pin tool (designed for fastening foam board to wood, steel and concrete - with available nosepiece attachments for washers).
    Pneu Tools
Pneu Tools also debuted their new concept, a camouflage tool color scheme - pictured above. And we visited our friends at Cadex to check out their rock-solid line of finish and trim tools - including the CB18.50A (replaced by Cadex V2/18.50).
    BeA Rolling Tool
We also got the chance to view and demo some new and exciting product lines - including products that are still in the concept phase. For 2015, look for new tools from Grex, Fasco, BeA, Everwin, Omer and many of your other favorite brands. Look for expanded product offerings on NGD as well - with new attachments, compressors and accessories coming to the site. For those interested in automated fastening solutions, we have something special in the works as well.

  • What's A Hog Ring Tool Used For?

When you hear the word hog ring, a fastener might not be the first object that comes to mind. Hog ring tools are not necessarily the most common item in a DIY workshop, but hog rings play an important role in almost everyone's daily life - from the car seat you sit on to wire fencing and mesh bags.

Similar to a staple gun, these tools drive "c" shaped collated fasteners (hog rings), which are used to attach wire, fabric and other materials - and lock them in place. You might hear someone refer to hog ring pliers as a bag closing stapler or hog ringer, as these tools are commonly used to close and seal a bag or sack at the opening. The most common applications that hog rings excel at include: automotive seat manufacturing, bedding and mattresses, wire cages, and plant and pot tagging.

To maneuver most hog ring tools, set the width of the jaws (when closed), then open the jaws by pulling the handles on the pliers. Affix the hog ring and jaws over the area in need to fastening and squeeze the handles to activate the tool.

Now that we know what a hog ring tool is and how it is used, let's look at some of the options that are available on the market. Some of the best tools you can buy, look at Bostitch's selection of hog ring tools. The SC7 Series Hog Ring Tools by Bostitch are time tested - and have a strong track record for optimal performance. The SC7 Series tools are designed for heavy-duty use in manufacturing or construction.

For smaller projects that don't justify the extra expense of an industrial grade tool, Bostitch also offers a couple manual hog ring tools, the HFP9 and the P7. While these manual tools do come with some limitation to their range of application, they are generally the preferred models for the do it yourselfer that is caging a home garden or attaching signs to fencing.

Do you know which hog ring tool is right for you? Contact our customer service team with your application and we'll pair you with a tool to get the job done right.

  • How To Choose The Right Upholstery Stapler

Remodeling a chair or piece of furniture? If you work with - or are planning to do upholstery work - you will want to find an upholstery stapler that properly suits your needs. To the novice, you will want to select your staple gun based on its specific application. Upholstery staplers are designed for applications that range from industrial use to amateur fabric work. Finding the right one for you can be easy - if you know what to look for.

For those just getting into upholstering, you will probably want to select your stapler based on the application you are intending to use it for. First, you will need to measure the material you are working with, to determine the gauge (thickness), crown (width) and leg (length) of the staple necessary for your project. Once you know the gauge of staple needed, you can find the appropriate stapler - you will also see that a variety of brands are available to choose from including Senco, BeA, Duo-Fast, Spotnails, Grex and more.

Depending on the thickness of material, you will probably choose between a 20 gauge or 22 gauge upholstery stapler. Next you will need to decide whether you want a pneumatic (air-powered) tool or an electric tool. If you do not have an air compressor, an electric tool will bypass the need for one - however, pneumatic upholstery staplers are typically less expensive. One of Nail Gun Depot's most popular items, the Duo-Fast EIC-3118 electric upholstery stapler (replaced by Fasco-Maestri 7C-16 3/8" crown electric stapler) eliminates the need for an air compressor - without sacrificing performance.

Once you have gained some additional experience, you might want to upgrade to a long nose upholstery stapler. The extended nose on these staple guns allows them to reach into tighter spaces. The BeA 71/16-436LN long nose, pneumatic upholstery stapler, is a top of the line tool that comes recommended by many upholsterers - including the writers at ModHomeEc. You can see their review of Nail Gun Depot's stapler selection here. Long nose upholstery staplers are typically used for more skilled projects, projects that require a higher level of intricacy. If you are sticking to small, simple upholstery work, using a regular nose upholstery stapler should yield the necessary results for your project.

  • Specialty Fastening Tools You Need To Know About

We talk a lot about the mainstream fastening tools that most of our customers can relate to their job site, but what about the specialty tools that go beyond a traditional finish nailer or flooring stapler? That's right, we're talking about the big-guns. These tools are not available at your big box stores. They are custom built - designed with the capability to function above and beyond the norm. Sometimes, it takes a little bit more to get the job done right. Now is your chance to discover some of these tools that can make your job easier - tools that you can't just find anywhere.

Let's start with one of our favorite specialty fabricators, Motion Devices, a company that takes Senco brand tools and gives them a unique twist in function. A new addition to the Nail Gun Depot site, the Senco MD0054 is a prime example of tool fabrication that provides added value to the user. To the ordinary eye, this tool would appear to be a Senco FP42, however, upon further examination, not only can this tool be used as a finish nailer, but can also act as a floor nailer via a removable attachment. In combining the function of multiple tools, the MD0054 will ultimately save a floor installer or general contractor on the amount of tools they need.

Another great example, the MD4913 utilizes the popular Senco SNS200XP, converting it into a medium crown tube closing clinch stapler. The Senco MD4913 tube closing clinch stapler is designed to secure plastic and metal end caps on mailing and shipping tubes. Likewise, the MW4941 Wide Crown Clinch Stapler is ideal for softwood and corrugated cardboard applications. Enhancements to this tool include a new remote firing valve for fast and powerful operation, a high-strength compostive magazine, and an extremely durable exhaust cap to prevent damage.

A powerful option in the corrugated fastening segment, the BeA W-Type Corrugated Fastener Tool (12000133) virtually eliminates the need for gluing, milling, clamping, screwing and other time-consuming operations. Designed with durability in mind, a corrugated fastener is twice as strong as a regular fastener - meaning this tool is a must have item for anyone that regularly works with corrugated products, such as cardboard. This BeA tool also features a compact design which gives it the agility to seal butt and corner joints with ease.

Last, but certainly not least, we couldn't leave the topic of specialty tools without mentioning carton closing staplers. Looking for an outstanding example? The Josef Kihlberg A560PN heavy-duty carton stapler is designed to tackle high and low volume closing of corrugated cardboard including box folding, complete overlap and more.
