  • Screw Gun Showdown - Simpson's Quik Drive Screw System

February is remodeling month at Nail Gun Depot - and what better way to celebrate remodeling month than by kicking off our FIRST-EVER Screw Gun Showdown. If you work in a renovation or remodeling trade, chances are you've used either a Quik Drive « screw system and/or a Senco DuraSpin « screw gun. Used for drywall installation, deck building, metal roofing, general construction and much more - both screw systems are top-rated in their class - but which one is right for you? You can learn more about Simpson's Quik Drive, and Senco's DuraSpin - right here on the Nail Gun Network.
    Screw Gun Showdown
For part-one in our Screw Gun Showdown series, let's take an in-depth look at Quik Drive's screw fastening systems - featuring some of their top-rated tools. Per Simpson Strong-Tie's website, Quik Drive is designed to perform optimally when used for the following applications: subflooring/sheathing, decks/docks, drywall, fiberglass-backed gypsum sheathing, fiber-cement siding, standing-seam metal roofing, exposed fastener metal roofing, tile roofing, steel framing, steel decking, underlayment, truck beds, crating, truss ply fastening, and ledgers on steel - among others. With Simpson screw fastening tools, the type of application you fasten determines the type of Quik Drive system you require.
    Quik Drive Apps
Different from Senco's DuraSpin, which we will cover in the second part of this series, Quik Drive screw systems are customizable, composed of various components that are paired to tackle a specific set of applications. A traditional Quik Drive system consists of three main components - a motor, an extension (for applications that require bending or reaching), and an attachment (designed for a specific application). The motor is relatively universal, and is more or less based on user preference - Nail Gun Depot specializes in Makita-powered screw gun motors for Quik Drive. The extension arm is based on the type of application you are screwing into place, but is not necessarily required - for example, you might not use an extension for drywall installation, whereas you would for deck fabrication. The most unique piece to the puzzle, the attachment, determines what you will be fastening. Quik Drive attachments vary depending on the type of fastener an application requires - just think of each Quik Drive kit like pairing wine and cheese.

The Screw Gun Showdown features the following Quik Drive screw systems:
    Quik Drive Attachment
Quik Drive also offers a limited-lifetime warranty on all of its QDPRO attachments - providing added peace of mind for contractors who need to get the most out of their tools.
    Quik Drive Drywall App
Something else to keep in mind, though not included in the Screw Gun Showdown, Fein recently released a cordless motor that features a built-in Quik Drive adapter - so you can plug in any Quik Drive attachment on the go, no hassle.

  • Visiting The 2014 STAFDA Show

You were probably surprised to see there wasn't a new NGD blog post yesterday. Well, we're making up for it today, now that we're back from STAFDA.
    STAFDA 2014
To summarize the entire 2014 STAFDA show, we would have to write a book. With several hundred exhibitors - and many more attendees - STAFDA is a mecca for the tool and fastener industry. Every year, the Specialty Tools & Fasteners Distributors Association (STAFDA) puts on the event, hosting the convention in various cities across the U.S.
    STAFDA 2014
This year, STAFDA visited Charlotte, NC. Home to the NASCAR Hall of Fame and other attractions, here's a brief overview of NGD's trip to North Carolina.
    Charlotte, NC
As tool and fastener technology continues to grow, STAFDA is a great place to catch a glimpse of the latest and greatest within the industry. Among highlights of the show, we caught a close-up glance at the Bostitch Smart Point nailers - as well as their all-new cordless carton closing staplers. We also saw QuikDrive's new cordless motor (powered by Fein), capable for use with all QuikDrive attachments. Stinger featured all of their cap fastening tools - and we saw an up close demonstration of the stand-up CAMO hidden-deck fastening tool.
    CAMO EdgePro
From Senco, STAFDA served as the launching point for two new tools, the RoofPro 445XP and the SCN63LDXP structural foam insulation nailer. MAX displayed their completely refreshed CN565S2 coil siding nailer - and Jaaco featured their ballistic pin tool (designed for fastening foam board to wood, steel and concrete - with available nosepiece attachments for washers).
    Pneu Tools
Pneu Tools also debuted their new concept, a camouflage tool color scheme - pictured above. And we visited our friends at Cadex to check out their rock-solid line of finish and trim tools - including the CB18.50A (replaced by Cadex V2/18.50).
    BeA Rolling Tool
We also got the chance to view and demo some new and exciting product lines - including products that are still in the concept phase. For 2015, look for new tools from Grex, Fasco, BeA, Everwin, Omer and many of your other favorite brands. Look for expanded product offerings on NGD as well - with new attachments, compressors and accessories coming to the site. For those interested in automated fastening solutions, we have something special in the works as well.

Moving to a tool for specialized use, Senco has launched the SCN63LDXP structural foam insulation nailer, capable of driving 15 degree, 2-3/8" to 2-1/2" wire coil framing nails. Designed specifically for the installation of continuous structural foam insulation panels, the SCN63LDXP Coil Nailer drives nails through up to 1" thick foam insulation panels. The Senco SCN63LDXP features a long drive lock out, ensuring the proper seating of a nail head - through the foam - against the substrate. The unique safety foot guide ensures proper alignment and reduces damage to the foam surface when fasteners are driven. The SCN63LDXP fastening system reduces installation time and improves productivity on the job site or for in-plant operations. Additional features on this tool include 360 degree adjustable exhaust, tool-free depth of drive adjustment, comfort grip, adjustable nail canister, e-z load design, debris shield and a five-year limited warranty from Senco. Please note this tool is to ONLY be used to install continuous foam insulation with a foam thickness of up to 1" deep - NEVER use on bare wood, metal or other hard surfaces. The drive blade will extend beyond the safety element in the actuated position. This tool is rated for Atlas ThermalStar LCi-SS insulation.
